JabbaWockeeZ

JabbaWockeeZ is an all-male California dance troupe who first gained fame by appearing on the first season of America's Got Talent, before becoming the inaugural winners of the MTV hip hop dance competition series America's Best Dance Crew. The group has made cameos in many videos from notable artists such as Daddy Yankee in "Pose". The group also performed with Daddy Yankee on the Latin Billboard Awards in 2009.

Career

The ten-man group was formed in 2003 by members Joe Larot, Kevin Brewer and Phil Tayag. They are known for their intricate synchronization and precise dances, mime and kabuki-styled theatrics while wearing masks and gloves during most of their performances. The group name is derived from the Lewis Carroll poem "Through the looking Glass", while their self-named dance style, Beat Kune Do, is named after the Bruce Lee-created martial arts style Jeet Kune Do.

JabbaWockeeZ started out with appearances at local showcases and club events in San Diego and Los Angeles. Their first televised appearance was during the second season of America's Got Talent, in which they auditioned in Dallas, Texas. They were eliminated during the Las Vegas callbacks on July 10, 2007.^[1]

They received an incredible amount of exposure and success on season one of America's Best Dance Crew when they were crowned the winners on March 27, 2008. Their win earned the crew $100,000 and a touring contract. JabbaWockeeZ final performance on the show was to Kanye West's "Stronger", which marked their first public unmasked performance.

Since ABDC they appeared in a Pepsi and Gatorade commercial,^[2] danced on the The Ellen DeGeneres Show,^[3] and on Live with Regis and Kelly, made a cameo in Step Up 2: The Streets,^[4] toured with New Kids on the Block,^[5] and launched their own clothing line.

In Feb 15,2009,They accompanied and danced with NBA all star Shaquille O'Neal in his NBA All-Star Game player introduction.

Along with the ABDC season 2 winner, Super Cr3w, JabbaWockeeZ were the opening act for the Battle of the VMAs special, but the groups did not compete against each other.

MANILA, Philippines—Incredible but true: Filipinos excel in international hip hop dance competitions.

There’s the homegrown Philippine All Stars, which beat 27 countries to win the 2006 and 2008 World Hip Hop Championships. And then there’s the California-based Jabbawockeez, currently a 10-man group—four of whom are Pinoys—which took the grand prize last year in the inaugural season of the MTV show “America’s Best Dance Crew.”

Jabbawockeez, which took its name from the playful, unconventional Lewis Carroll poem “Jabberwocky,” is in town for a series of Ayala Mall shows, with guests DJ Rashida and Billy Crawford. The last one is tonight, 6 p.m. at Glorietta 4.

Formed in 2003, the group started by competing at local club events in San Diego and LA. It originally had eight members led by Gary Kendall, an American who died just before Jabbawockeez joined “ABDC.” His death spurred the rest—Rynan Paguio, Chris Gatdula, Phil Tayag, Joe Larot (Philippines), Ben Chung (Korea), Jeff Nguyen (Vietnam) and Kevin Brewer (United States) to aim higher.

The Pinoys, happy to be home, sat down for a short chat with the Inquirer:

Did anyone of you attend formal dance school?

Rynan: Most of us just practiced in the garage with friends. We just laid out the linoleum, pretty much like breakdancing … In time we developed a technique. When hip hop started evolving and dance studios began to hire hip hop instructors, we ended up teaching … We adapted what jazz teachers did in their counting …

Is there a leader, or how does the creative process work for the group?

Rainen: There’s no leader … it’s like a potluck where everybody brings in their share …

Phil: It’s like sinigang … or sisig …

Kevin: We collectively put stuff in … as choreographers, the music is the root of it … it sets the mood, tempo and feel of it … If the instrumental is upbeat, then of course our moves will reflect that mood …

Who thought of incorporating mime, kabuki masks and Jeet Kune Do elements into the choreography?

Kevin: We didn’t want people to know who we were so we put on masks. But of course when people can’t see our facial expressions we had to use our bodies and that’s where the mime came in. But it wasn’t our goal to have these elements. We just developed [the whole act]. As for Jeet Kune Do, that’s the philosophy behind the dance, inspired by Bruce Lee. It’s about honestly expressing one’s self through movement.

Has this become a full-time career for the group?

Rynan: Right now it’s our 9 to 5. We’ve set up a company ... if we’re not dancing, we’re rehearsing or working on our clothing line, doing a video, updating the website...

Was that the original goal?

No, we just wanted to dance together and have a good time. It was really Gary who was like the main guy. He always had high hopes and dreams for the group. When he passed away we started to push for that. And we started seeing people get driven by what we do, just by the way we dance.

Is there a Pinoy element at all in your dance moves?

Chris: Well, we’re a little behind the times, but we can do the ocho-ocho.

KABAMODERN

Kababayan crew

Kaba Modern, an Orange County-based dance crew was formed in 1992 by a group of kababayans at the University of California in Irvine during one of their Filipino cultural nights.

Originally called “The Modern Suite," the group carved a reputation in the competition as a cutting-edge hip hop crew for their synchronicity and killer isolations.

In the tense semi-final bout with Jabba on the competition’s seventh week, Kaba wowed judges N’Sync member JC Chasez, rapper Lil Mama and choreographer Shane Sparks.

Jabba however prevented Kaba from reaching the finals after winning the semi-final round and went head-to-head with Status Quo.

Despite this, Kaba still left a strong impression among the show’s fans who even agonized their sudden exit.

“Kaba Modern did some stuff with their heads and some mouth thing [popping his head from side to side], and I was like, OK, they're taking it to another level right now," Sparks said after the competition.

Following the success of the hip hop dance competition, MTV announced that it will open the show for a second season this summer. Auditions in the US will start in June.

JabbaWockeeZ voted America's Best Dance Crew

MANILA, Philippines - After more than seven weeks of jaw-dropping pop-locks and crazy-cool breakdancing, JabbaWockeeZ took home the grand prize and the title as America's Best Dance Crew.

In an epic battle between East and West, the San Diego, California-based “Jabba" beat Boston's Status Quo after more than a record-breaking 38 million votes were cast on the March 25 finale for MTV’s reality-based dance competition, Randy Jackson Presents: America's Best Dance Crew.

Jabba took home the $100,000 cash pot and a tour contract where the group is expected to dish out more of their electrifyingly theatrical hip hop moves.

Following their victory, they guested for the popular Regis and Kelly show and has gained enormous fan base in the US.

The oft-masked Jabba members who performed for the competition were Vietnamese Jeff Nguyen, X-box fanatic Ben Chung, music producer, Kevin Brewer, Phil Tayag, graphic designer Chris Gatdula, and the only confirmed Pinoy in the group so far, Rynan Shawn Paguio.

US-based Filipino fan Erwin Bermejo emailed to GMANews.TV that Jabba actually has two other Filipino members in the competition aside from Paguio.

GMANews.TV tried by e-mail to confirm the Filipino ethnicities of both Tayag and Gatdula but our efforts have so far been unsuccessful. Tayag, 23, is from Sacramento, California while Gatdula, 26, is from Las Vegas, Nevada.

“They are also part of the movie Step Up 2. Reynan Shawn Paguio, member of the Jabbawockeez has lots of appearances in that movie. You would see him dancing in the last part," Bermejo tipped off.

Jabba has 11 members but America's Best Dance Crew required only six performers in a competing team.

“Being on the show gives us opportunities, but we like to get down in ciphers and circles and just dance. We battle people all the time," Paguio told freelance journalist Maggie Furlong after the competition.

When asked who they thought was their biggest competition in the show, the 26-year-old newly-wed namedropped another kababayan crew.

“Honestly, the biggest competition we thought, when we first got on the show, was Kaba Modern and Live in Color," Paguio said.
